Proposal for Advising Period

Building Our Students’ Success (BOSS)

Objective:  Create a time during the instructional day where students are engaged in an advising period.

Proposal:  Reduce class change time to five minutes and take 7 minutes from each class.    This would allow 34 minutes for an advising period including the time that it takes for students to arrive in advising periods.  The advising period would meet once on a weekly basis.

·        During this time, all teachers responsible for creating and implementing PEPs would be released from advisory responsibilities and work entirely on PEPs during that time.

·        All other teachers would serve as advisors.

·        An advisory period committee would develop several lessons designed to be used in the advisory periods.

·        Teachers serving as advisors would also develop their own lessons to use with the students.  It would be important that topics covered in the advisory period be pertinent to the advising group (for example, a junior homeroom may focus on the steps to applying to college or getting a job)

·        Advisors who matriculate with their classes starting with grade 10.

·        All 9th grade advisors would always serve 9th graders.

·        The advising period is where all class business would be taken care of – for example if seniors need to have their class photos taken, it would occur during the advising period and not cut into instructional time.

·        All announcements, distribution of information, and other items would occur during the advising period with no interruption into the regular instructional day.

·        The advising period could rotate between different times of the day.

·        Guidance would be available during the advisory period to assist students with concerns.
